Death by sheriff

My understanding is that a sheriff in Hawaii comes under the judiciary or court system, unlike sheriffs you might come across on the mainland. Both the links Leilanidude posted and the one by My 2 cents seem consistent with this.

Figures. Constitutionally the sheriff is the only "legal" law enforcement for a county because the citizens get to vote for them. Regarded as the highest legal authority in their county.
When bureaucratically appointed removes that option. But not unexpected as something that would be done here.
