I had no idea we'd met, I'm just pointing out that "sacred" is a word that seems extremely vague and is used inappropriately by many people on the island, especially when it comes to things they don't like and want to stop.

The Mauna where you work is NOT sacred . But some humans say it is - some of the protectors smoke cigs and leave the cig butts every where.
Shame on them. We are for the TMT 1000 percent.
YPO has burial mounds with artifacts in hidden places in the back of YPO going back several hundreds of years before Capt Cook came to the then Sandwich Islands.
To us YPO is sacred in that regard . The Loi go back 300 plus years as the tsunamis neva went that far back in.
Putting a stiffer fine on non 4x4 tourists will not stop them but will raise awareness for safety for the locals that have HUGE local ohana.
Maybe social media will get non residents to heed caution by slapping them where it hurts them the most. wallet .

You could make it county residents only. But any regulation base on religious beliefs ( sacred ) is illegal and unconstitutional.

Exactly my point... "Sacred" seems to be evolving to the default: "F-YOU, keep out, this is MY playground..."

Unfortunately it is not the tourists, but locals from places like Kona and Hilo that do the most damage to, have the least respect for, the sacred places in YPO. You never see tourists riding ATVs all over the place, racing through the rivers, crashing onto peoples property. Come on down any weekend, especially on the holidays, you'll see how many "locals" think the valley is their private playground to bust up any way they like.

I think the large tour vans are more of an issue than my Jeep going down the road.
