The reason for the split between FedEx and Amazon:

It may not happen in Hilo, but at least to Honolulu would be nice.

Amazon has been flying to HNL for years. Before launching Prime Air they were leasing jets from Atlas.

If my recent experience with FedEx is any indicator of their level of service, it can't happen soon enough. Nearly a month to get a package here from the Mainland - was mis-sent to Wailuku, back to California, CA to Wailuku again, back to Honolulu and then they couldn't find it for a week...

Sounds bad. Fedex bought out the all cargo airline I worked for for 5 years ending in 1982. That was Flying Tiger Line. Tigers overextended before that when the bought Seaboard World Airline in 1980. They bought it not for the equipment, but to gain routes in Europe. Two years later the Seattle Tigers laid off about 25 of us ramp service people, me being the second highest in seniority of that group.I found out later that Fedex offered to let the Tiger's folks come to work for Fedex, but they would lose half of their seniority. That was quite a blow to my old coworkers, as when you work for the airlines, it can be man years till you build up the seniority to get weekends off on day shift. I worked grave yard with Sundays and Mondays off before the big layoff. If I wouldn't have been laid off, it's possible I would have stuck with Fedex and retired with them.

Boring? Hell yes, but I miss the people I worked with at Flying Tigers. We busted our butts loading and unloading out DC-8s and 747s. The 747s we bought with the Seaboard World purchase were junk. Those were the days. Worked hard, played hard.

Speaking of Flying Tigers, back in the 70's I had a friend whose brother had done a tour in Vietnam.
He came home, went back to school got a Poly-Sci degree then went to work for FT. He spent the next several years working out of Thailand coming back to the U.S. only on rare occasion until a few years after we pulled out of there.

My suspicion always was that his employment was a cover for some covert type of activity.
Don't know, Never asked.
