Daily air quality map
#1
This NOAA site with a map of S02 concentrations was recently linked on Hunter Bishop's blogsite <www.hunterbishop.com>.

Right now it's pretty scary, showing the whole island covered with heavy Sulfer dioxide(?)concentrations. It's updated daily.

The County viewing site closed yesterday because of light and variable wind. There was volcanic ash and small particles of glass and gas at the site as well. It doesn't look much better today. I can see the ocean entry plume from my house, and it's pretty much going straight up.

I was looking at that map. How up to date is it? It says May 14 on the bottom. It must look much worse today.

I've been watching that map for a week or two. I got the link elsewhere. It seems to be updated daily, I believe. From what I can tell, when the tradewinds are blowing, life is good in Puna, and even the Kona side is only impacted to a minor degree. Today looks pretty atrocious, though. No tradewinds, stagnant air, SO2 & vog set in.

Wind has been blowing constantly this morning here in HPP. My outdoor windchimes have been going non-stop.

I never put alot of faith in the weathermen and forcasts.

An hour and a half ago you couldn't see from Kamehameha Ave across the bay to the hotels on Banyan. Its getting better now.

For a moment there I though the title of this thread was" Daily quality nap". I got pretty excited there for a minute.

The County viewing site is closed again today. This morning there was a fine layer of white crystals on some of the trash can lids etc. (salt?,ash?)

It looks like most of the cloud is blowing towards Hilo, but the area adjacent to the ocean entry is intermittently exposed.
