Riot at HCCC
#1
Never thought I'd ever see the word "riot" used for something happening in Hilo, but here you go:

"Riot Reported At HCCC: Inmates Set Fire, Barricade Door"

People setting fire to the building that they are locked inside of. I wonder what they thought that would accomplish?

Well, given the lax state of law enforcement and the lack of consequences for criminal behavior hereabouts, only the most stupid of the stupid and the worst criminals do jail time. Plus, the pandemic has made it even less likely for people to be jailed. The rioters were either very stupid, had nothing to lose, or both.

I support the jail, it's something we definitely need, but ... it really needs to be located somewhere else.

We could look at HCCC as a microcosm for Planet Earth.  We're all in this together. One powerful group however, who might be described as, "perhaps the most stupid of the stupid and the worst criminals" or maybe just the greediest, decide to set on fire the atmosphere, and the air we breathe. They say things like "nah, burning up the cafeteria won't affect my cell-block." Another community, let's call them the guard-ians, see there's a catastrophe developing, one that will eventually affect everyone, and rush in with fire extinguishers, water hoses and other measures of self preservation for our own short term (if the cafeteria burns down, we don't eat) and long term best interests.

Stay tuned.  After November 3rd we'll see which direction we're headed.

Isn't there a prison on Stainback? Seems like a good place for a jail...
