...ACTIVE WEATHER EXPECTED TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY WITH THE RISK
OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND POSSIBLY FLASH FLOODING...

An unusually strong upper level disturbance will move into the
area tonight through Saturday, bringing the possibility of very
active weather to portions of the Aloha State. The latest guidance
indicates an increasing potential for strong to severe
thunderstorms, which could produce damaging winds and large hail,
as well as the possibility for localized intense rainfall and
flash flooding.

Impacts could begin over the western end of the state as early as
tonight, with a transition to more of a widespread potential
Friday through Saturday. Listen for later statements, as well as
possible watches and warnings, as this event becomes more clear.

I can't remember the last time we had weather like this in May, including violent thunderstorms. It seems very unusual to me.

I don't know if they made it down to BI, but I remember in 2014 there were torrential downpours on Kauai on Memorial Day weekend. I remember because I was on vacation there at the time lol.

I have a theory. The solar flares set off the aurora borealis, which was so strong it flipped the polarity of our magnetic poles, causing strange weather deviations such as clouds moving the wrong way across the sky, rain coming mauka to makai and thunderstorms in May. I think itʻs the only possible explanation.

ISSUED: 4:20 AM MAY. 14, 2024 – NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

* WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be
possible.

* WHERE...All the main Hawaiian islands.

* WHEN...From Wednesday morning through Friday evening.

* IMPACTS...Significant flooding may occur due to the overflow of
streams and drainages. Roads in several areas may be closed, along
with property damage in urban or low lying spots due to runoff.
Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- A kona low developing north of the state will bring the
potential for  heavy rain and thunderstorms over portions of
the state from Wednesday through Friday and possibly
continuing through the weekend. The highest chances for
excessive rainfall appear to be over Oahu and Maui county
later Wednesday and Wednesday night, then slowly shift
westward, with the focus mainly on Kauai by later Friday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Remember that it does not have to be raining at your location for
flash flooding to occur. If you notice signs of heavy rain or
thunderstorms upslope, move quickly away from flood prone areas.

No doubt we can get heavy downpours in May, but I can't remember when we also had severe thunderstorms in May. You need really cold temperatures high up in the atmosphere which is why we tend to get thunderstorms during the winter, not in the spring. Obviously, I'm not including tropical storms which are a different beast, but we don't get those in the spring either!
