You can check with your Post Master, most likely you will have to request a box in person... in '05 you actually had to have a residence in the area... but those things change annually... so check for current regs.

You can forward mail to general delivery... You do have to pick up general delivery at the window, good way to meet a lot of people, but does take some time....

Our Postmaster in Oregon applied for a po box about six weeks before we got here. With him doing that for us we had a bit of a head start on getting our box. It wouldn't hurt to go in and talk to your PM if you know when you'll be coming over.

We had secure RR (Rural route)boxes installed at the entrance of our lower Puna subdivision. There is no annual cost, and if you meet the mail person there, you can mail packages and conduct other postal business without having to go to town.

The Post Office provided the original boxes at no charge (We put in a small slab to bolt them to).

From what I understand, RR customers are now responsible for paying for the secure boxes.(not the USPS) The cost however, is comparable to a box in town that has an annual rate..(Even cheaper if you figure in gas, time etc). As far as I know you own the box, and could sell it if you moved. If you have a neighborhood association, have them look into it. Hell, look into it for them!

We use a private mail box, pmb xxx, less trouble having things shipped and so forth. Mail and ship in Keaau is the one we use, there are others.
