"Moved" house
#1
I haven't seen it in a while, but occasionally in the HTH classifieds there is an ad that reads "Old house wanted for cash, will move"- Has anyone out there done this? I see them in various subdivisions, there are a couple here in Leilani. I was wondering if it's cost effective, what kind of permits needed, etc. A lot of the older houses in Hilo are all heart redwood (such as Hicks homes),so should be in good shape.

In my collage days in Hilo, I knew a few people who bought old suger cane homes.

Then they used the wood to rebuild their own houses. (They were using the old house for parts )

I have seen homes moved from one property to another. To be specific, The Alameda Historical Society, Alameda California, and I'm sure many other Historical societies have had this experience. They move old Victorians out of business neighborhoods or such to new locations. Homes are jacked up off of the foundations, after plumbing and electrical removed, put on truck beds and moved, set down on a new foundation and reconnected. This might be a resource for how difficult the project is. A possible google search could find this info for you I'm sure. Then you could share this on the forum. Just an idea!

Thanks mella, Yes I've seen that done several times in Oregon, but the last time I saw it done here was in 1991, when the last houses were moved from Kalapana. Since so many thousands more people are in lower Puna now, and there is still only one 2 lane road in & out, I don't know if it's feasible or even possible anymore to truck a house all the way from Hilo because of traffic concerns.
