bird mites - pest control company
#1

Yikes. We seem to have bird mites. Lots of them.

Does anybody have any good or bad things to say about the pest control companies? I rang Bowman up first because their yellow page ad explicitly mentioned bird mites, but if it comes down to something expensive like tenting (hopefully not!) maybe it would be a good idea to get a few quotes from various people.

Just to follow up on myself, Bowman turned out to be great - came when they said they would, did what they said they did, very knowledgeable, kept us informed every step of the way. If anyone is unfortunate enough to need a pest control company, I thoroughly recommend them - ask for Ralph.

Oh and learn from my mistake - don't let birds nest on your house!

Am curious how Bowman addressed your mite problem. Did they spray? What chemical did they use?

Well since the bird mites had gotten into the house, they set off some of those fumigation "bombs" and also treated the window frames to stop more coming in (since they are so small they walk right through the mosquito screens). They also climbed to the top of the house (very brave given the house) and removed all the bird nests, and stapled some kind of hardware cloth under the eaves to stop the birds coming back.

I'm sorry I can no longer remember the names of the chemicals, they did tell me at the time and I gave them a quick google. The house was meant to be safe to return within 5 hours of treatment. To be safe, we opened the windows and went away for the weekend and kept the pets out for a week so we could vacuum before their return.

The geckos are still around (yay!), the ants made it and some little flies that also were in the house died. So it must have been reasonably targeted stuff.
