Aloha Buzz & Puna folks,
If you want some night blooming jasmine, Buzz, come get some trimmings to plant. Our small shrub has gotten quite large now and could use a trim. It doesn't seem terribly invasive but it is vigorous!
I've also got loads of sprouted coconuts, ti plants, coffee seedlings, heliconia, dracena, assorted herbs and all sorts of green growies all over the place. If you want cuttings, send me an email at hotzcatz@yahoo.com to see when to come get them. The drawback is that I'm way on the other side of Hilo, up near David in Ninole and near Laupahoehoe. You can have a truck load of cuttings, though, if you get up this far. (I should be out doing yardwork instead of playing with the computer.)
A hui hou,
Cathy

don't forget that most varieties of plumeria are deciduous even on the hilo side outside of some southeast asian varieties....so you will have skeleton trees during the colder seasons the evergreen variety is pretty expensive in price since they are more desireable...how about some various jasmines like tahitian jasmine that can grow into larger tree/shrub forms? Also Michaela alba is very aromatic and other varieties of michaelas.....other great flowering varieties include shower trees, bauhinia / tree orchids and the purple (oops forgot the name - part of accacia family - theres quite a few growing in waimea area that bloom late may/june)

Aloha Noel, could that be Jacaranda? For Lisa; Garden exchange, downtown Hilo usually has Puakinikini. Be sure to get a flowering cutting grown plant though, seedlings some times take several years to bloom.

We have two Hong Kong Orchid Trees that have blooms all the time. We are at 600' in Orchidland. A couple of times a year they really go off and are totally covered. From an Australian source:
"Grow Bauhinia in the garden for its flowers alone. From a distance the tree is a mass of colour. Up close, the flowers, which are quite large, resemble orchids or butterflies and they range in colour from yellow through pink to deep purple. The flowers are also perfumed. On most Bauhinias the flowers are followed by long, flat legume like seed pods, which can stay on the plant for months and look a bit untidy, but the Hong Kong Orchid Tree is sterile, so it doesn't produce seed pods."

I cut a piece of NB jasmine from a yard I was in and it took root in my window sill without any help (rootone etc)... in about 4 weeks it was ready for the garden.
My puakinikini is still trying to grow (with rootone) because they are much harder to start (I heard) but it ha sonly been 2 weeks so far.
My Sierra Club friend said I WAS NOT TO PLANT KAHILI GINGER.... one of my favorite scents.... it is alien and invasive. So I just cut blooms when I go upcountry.

I already had kahili when I bought my place, so I let it stay, (so pretty and sweet) but try to be sure and cut off the spent blooms before they set seed, has never spread.

I have a kukui nut started in a pot. Does anyone know anything about where to plant and how much sun and water to make it happy?
I might be in the wrong thread. Does it actually have flowers?

Hi Oink,
I have a kukui nut tree to. I planted it in full sun. I grows really fast. It is known as the candlelight tree. The nuts have oil in it that burns. They are proposing to use this as a fuel alternitive. If you don't know what a kukui nut tree looks like, Keaau high school has them planted in front of the football field. They are posionious not for food consumption. The leave hardly drop which is nice.

I want some for my poke. Mine is about 18 inches, still in a pot. I wonder how long before I get nuts? I do miss the many kinds of poke to be had.
