Hi Everyone,
I thought I'd add my 2 cents to what has grown well for me so far up here in Mountain View at 2200 feet. Tomatillos, cherry tomatoes, pear tomatoes, Collards are doing amazing, kale, green beans, thai basil, mint, cilantro, lettuce. Corn is still in the small stage but seems to be happy.
My citrus; lemon and lime, started off slow the first year but have suddenly had vigorous growth and have doubled in size although I have to get the hose out about once a month and give a firm spray to wipe out the recurring aphids. Apple bananas grow like weeds. My mulberry appears to be happy and healthy producing mulberries like mad, but the problem is they go from red to brownish/black rotten. They never get to that juicy black ripe stage. Does anyone have any suggestions? My recent acquisitions from Paradise plants bare root sale are "Dorsett apple" seems very happy and is a very pretty tree, Sour cherry, Florida Prince Peach and Bartlett Pear. The pear seems to be the slowest one to acclimate, but it also doesn't appear to be dying either, we shall see.
What I haven't had any luck growing have been any sorts of peppers. They all seem to shrivel, not enough dry sun heat I guess, also cucumbers seem to succomb to powdery mildew. My shiso plant just up and died overnight.
Overall most things seem to like growing up here, and I never have to water. I've been blessed with great neighbors who supply me with buckets of chicken compost and the plants love it. My next project is to get some chickens myself, and then clear the back acre and get 2 milking goats. We love our goat cheese.
