Aloha! Anyone know who built or designed or who lives in that amazing house across the street from Richardson Beach in Hilo? It is wood, with gnarled wood porch rails and the most beautiful roofline I've ever seen. IMO, it's the prettiest house in Hilo and
my Puna dreamhouse would look like a miniature replica of it!
Mahalo for any info or history of that place.

I can't remember the story, but read the historical plaque. It's to the right of the driveway, out by the parking lot.

I think that the plaque is in regards to the house George & Elsa Richardson built in 1920 after they were gifted the Keaukaha land from friends David & Elena Malo after the Richardsons assisted the family through typhoid illnesses ... which is now the Ocean Park Headquarters
BI - are you referring to the Ocean Park Headquarters, or to a building across Kalanianaole Ave?

It is a big wooden house across the street (mauka) from Richardson Beach. It looks like a private residence. It has a very distinctive "swoopy" roof, with pop-outs in the front and sides of the roof. I drove past it yet yesterday morning when I was going to Carlsmith Park.

Sorry, I thought you meant the headquarters. By pop-outs do you mean dormers or gables? I go by there a lot, and I can't think of anything too spectacular in that area. Certainly nothing outclassing the Richardsons house. Maybe it's so beautiful I can't see it?

I Google-mapped it. Not sure if this link will work, but here is the street view:

Also, Google Maps says the address is 2045 Kalanianaole Ave
I'd still love to find out more about this incredible place. i'm CURIOUS!

I believe that is a Bamboo Living Home. I tried to find a link on the webpage that I have, but couldn't find one, but I'm sure that if you google Bamboo Living Homes, you can find it.

Dee: you're right. I searched "Bamboo Living Home" and found the website, and that's exactly what that house is. Thank you so much!
And Hunt, yes, I meant flying gables when I said "pop-outs" on the roof.
What a cool house, and their website is full of beautiful houses made of bamboo.
Mystery solved.
Mahalo all!
