Funny, but never expected to post to this thread...

Just got back from a brief trip to Oahu. While there I figured I might as well try to eat. LOL

Back in Atlanta, Sophie and I were buffet experts - basically the two of us could eat out better and mo cheaper than we could cook in. One favorite type was your seafood, all you can eat crab leg type. Haven't found any here on BI, especially for $10 each. The one in Honolulu did sound good, even at $23. The Best Western near the airport. Apparently others like it also as by the time I left, there was a long line waiting there turn to get in. Anyway, I did myself proud on the prime rib, the crab legs, even the shrimp, mussels and clams, but what I completely surprised me was getting three healthy portions of poke - it was that good. mmmmmmmm

Next time you're on Oahu, go to Tanioka's on Farrington Hwy in Waipahu. They have a huge variety of awesome Poke. Trust me, if you like Poke, you will not be disappointed.

Howard,

Have you tried Ecuadorian Ceviche? Most of the most popular ceviche comes from Peruvian restaurants, and Ecuadorian restaurant. If you like Mexican ceviche you will absolutely love Ecuadorian ceviche. We have something called "lambi" where my family and I come from. It is actually raw conch (i think that’s how you spell that :-) cooked in lemon and lime juice and a tomato, red onion, green pepper, and baby cooking peppers all mixed in. The best way to have it is on the beach from the traveling vendors (better than any restaurant could ever make) and they serve it in shells with shell spoons, an extremely cold beer and you are set.

I've never even heard of Ecuadorian ceviche before, but it sounds terrific. I once went to a Peruvian restaurant in New York, but I'm not aware of any Ecuadorian restaurants there or either Peruvian or Ecuadorian restaurants in Philadelphia. I'll have to find out whether our local Spanish restaurant, which serves several types of ceviche, ever has Ecuadorian ceviche on its menu. Thanks for the tip.

There is a Peruvian/Mexican restaurant in Kona (Las Muchachas) and they have Peruvian Ceviche on the menu.

Thanks John. Now if I could only find a restaurant about 7000 miles east of there that also has it on the menu, I'd be able to try it without waiting for my next trip to Hawaii (which can't come soon enough to suit me, but nonetheless might be a while yet).

There has been a long standing debate on the origin of ceviche but the most popular theory has Peru barely edging out Ecuador.

Lots of different ways to prepare it, lots of different ways to enjoy it. I like conch and clam personally. Any firm fish works well too.
