A friend asked my husband this morning who owns the land if lava should roll over your lot. She heard that the state of Hawaii becomes the owner, and you have to buy it back. I didn't think so, but I said I would pose it to the "experts" out there! Thanks.

You retain ownership. My neighbors were burnt out of Kalapana in 1990, still own their land there. any "new land" where the lava has filled the ocean is state property.

Correct, you still own the land, but the question is what can you do with it?

Why not rip it and landscape it? Volcanic earth/rock/junk is very very good for growing in. Problem is really whether to build on it.. or whether a flow is coming again soon.
I say landsacpe, put u a yurt and have fun vacationing there!

John, If you are asking what to do with the land right after the flow, isn't that the perfect time for a lava Laulau pig?
Kidding aside, I seem to remember that there is a "cooling off" period (10 years seems to pop into my idled noggin) before building permits & such can be issued...but I could just be study crazed....life as a student!

The State of Hawaii just started resurveying Kalapana. That would be 25 years, right? Maybe it's the "island time."
