How to View Volcano Safely - Nighttime
#1
Anyone got any insight on this? We wanna see it at night when it's more dramatic (but not so dramatic we get to meet Pele personally LOL!)

I have the info for the Visitor's Center...but they are closed after 5:00pm...

The safest nighttime viewing is vis the web cam

hvo.wr.usgs.gov/cam/index.htm

But I guess you probably mean to hike there. Have you checked the info on the web?

if you want the greatest thrill in viewing the lava flows you need to go out in a boat and drive up to the flows. i've done it many times with a friend of mine and it's awesome. his son just started a tour lava viewing operation by boat, everyone who has gone out has said it was the best lava viewung experience they've had. i don't have his number handy, but i'll post it later.

Yes, please do post it. I would love to do that. I've never actually see any of the BI by boat and would especially love to see the Puna coast. Does he leave from Pohoiki?

As for seeing it at night, I guess the usual advice is to make the hike and hour or so before sunset so it will be dusk when you get to it and darken quickly. wear pants and good shoes, bring a flashlight or 2 with good batteries and some water. I think it's been a while though since people have been able to get very close to surface flow. So bring binoculars I guess.

we hiked out to the flow last weekend from the puna side. i don't recommend it though. it took 3 hours to get there, but the view of the fiery lava entering the ocean at night was magnificent. the hike from the chain of craters road is less than an hour and much less strenuous. the rangers leave about 7pm i believe but you can hike out there as late as you want. go to the end of the roped off area. it brings you to the edge of the cliff where there is an excellent view of the flowing lava
