Yoga/Meditation
#1
I figured I’d start a thread on Yoga. I’ve noticed that there are quite a few Yoga/Meditation places Puna and wondered if anyone on the forum practice.

Recently my wife and I both read and enjoyed the following meditation book…

If you get a change visit http://www.yogahanalei.com/, Bhavani Maki who owns Yoga Hanalei is a most amazing Yoga teacher.

Adjit,

I looked up the amazon link. This seems like a excellent introduction into meditation.

I put it on my to read list for a future time as I'm wwaaaayyyy behind on my reading right now. LOL not enough hours in the day, but when I'm hangin out in the hammock strung between two Ohia's watch out.

Thanks for the suggestion. Mella

Yoga has always been very important to me since i discovered it about age 20 on a public tv station. I have gotten away from it in the last 10 years and my health and mental well being suffers from not doing it. When Mariann and Eric were here we discussed yoga of which they do. I sure do want to incorporate it back into my life along with a much healther diet very, very soon. I did Hatha yoga and just simple meditation and not the spiritual part. I have other religous beliefs.

I’ve been meditating for about 15 years in various Buddhist traditions. Right now I practice with a group called Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) that is based in Portland Oregon, but has a center here in Ulaanbaatar. An old guide I read said that there was a FPMT center in Kea'au, but it no longer seems to exist. Does anyone know what happened to it?

The Pure Land Buddhist churches on the island do not generally practice meditation. It is not part of their tradition. There is a wonderful Buddhist meditation center and temple in Wood Valley http://www.nechung.org/

Would love to take a weekly Yoga class. Are there any classes that meet in the evenings in Puna? That are relatively affordable? (less than 15 bucks a session...)

Thanks, Linda in HI

The Bear and I spent a lovely afternoon at Wood Valley about a year ago. Very serene and lovely grounds. A nice monk welcomed us and helped explain some of the displays. There is a strong Tibetan emphasis with prayer flags and other Himalayan influences.

We just decided this very minute we need to go back! Thanks, Mella.

Aloha Mella,

Thanks for bringing this thread up, I’ve been so busy with life, that I’ve let my yoga and meditation practice to pot ;-), and seeing this is a reminder to get back to the core.

Temple in Wood Valley is definitely a place to visit or even stay on our next visit to the Island, especially since both Jerry and Rob speaks highly of the place.

A friend described the Wood Valley to me years ago as a spot that looks like Lake Tahoe. The pines and the other plantings made it reminiscent of Tahoe, no snow tho.

For some reason I had it in my minds eye that the Wood Valley was just off of Saddle Road, but no it is in the Kau district. The web site has explicit directions on how to reach the Temple site.
