Lava rock wall
#11
Good advice on the pedestrian gate. I'm pondering that one (it always boils down to budget). :-)

The latest on the wall...

One side (about 250 ft) is about done. It is looking good and very integrated into the environment.

Does anyone have any advice on whether it is ok to use the lava boulders (pahoehoe) that are scattered by the oceanfront?

The contractor asked if I had a problem with it. I mentioned that I would think about it. Is there any drawback with using rocks that are moist with salt mist? Is that rock less dense that rock from inland?

I suspect it is fine but wonder if anyone had experience with this.

Well, salt is an enemy of concrete. Probably best to wash the rocks before use. Someone once told me you will know you are aclimated to Hawaii when you find yourself washing rocks.

I'm not so sure it is okay to just pry up or gather rocks at the ocean front. You will have to make your decision about that. It would likely be someone's property. On our family farm in Connecticut we would regularly be amazed at people just coming on to our farm to steal stone from our stone walls. There are sources for stone and there are sources.

RT, thanks for the note. I will contact the contractor and advise him not use these rocks. I actually have quite a few in front of the lot so we intended to use those. However, for the reasons you mentioned and also the color difference, I'll used them for fill.
