native plants and proper land use
#1

A improper land use situation that has not been resolved in Puna, even with many concerned environmentalists here on the island and continues at an alarming rate is the poor management of land cleared for residential/or farm lots.
Proper design of each location with consideration of elevation, sunlight, rainfall and proximity to native forest areas and actual growing of plants before clearing land, will give the new land owner a head start before invasive species begin to take over. Clear only what is truly needed for your families use.Simple rules like allowing the uluhe fern to grow naturally. No mass clearing, without proper planning. You only open the pandoras box of invasive plant species to take over your aina.
Understanding what plants and trees are growing on your land, is an essential key to being a land owner in Hawaii.
