Downton Hilo plan
#1
From a media release I got off Hawaii247.0rg:

The final report by the American Institute of Architects Sustainable Design Assessment Team Program for Downtown Hilo is now available online.

It can be accessed on the American Institute of Architects website at: www.aia.org/about/initiatives/AIAS075426 (Click on Hilo Report), or on the EnVision Downtown Hilo 2025 SildeShare website at: www.slideshare.net/edh2025/downtown-hilo-sdat-final-report.

Looking through quickly, it looks like a great report.

Jerry, thanks for sharing this. It does appear to have some good ideas, also very nicely put together with photos etc. At first reading, it had me wondering about raising the entire street level as was once done in Sacramento, Chicago and other towns that needed infrastructure below ground or were dealing with flood issues. Even historical buildings were raised and have remained standing above the original ground level for a very long time. It would enable a Tsunami to flow under the existing downtown and provide parking. Of course with the seismic and flooding issues, this structure would have to withstand a lot if it is even possible.

It will be interesting to see what they do, if they do any or part of the suggestions. People here are so resistant to change of any kind, and we are talking major changes that need to be made.

Thanks again for sharing it Jerry. I am going to sit down and read it more closely.

Thanks for posting Jerry. I spent the afternoon reading the entire report. I know that is kind of sick but I like this kind of thing and was having a slow afternoon anyway! I could not agree more with the recommendation to move Bay Front Highway. I have always thought it was so wrong to have all of downtown removed from the bay by a highway. Something else that has been something close to me for sometime as some of you know is downtown residential. And I loved the idea of the woonerfs.

I liked how they talked about the branding of Hilo Town (pages 18-22 or so). They made soem very excellent points in this. Public transportation is also key (I liked the idea of bringing back sampans). Also the idea of using water as a feature was fab. Hilo is known for lots of rain so let's make it a positive!

Good stuff here! Woot!

I totally agree about bringing back the sampans, just to toot around downtown and to pick up people at the port and bring them downtown. That idea rocks! Richard Ha owns one.
