Saddle Road Update
#11
Interesting. When I came here as a visitor the southern route was my least favorite. The volcano blighted vegetation, not enough ocean. Hamakua coast was my favorite, and still is. Sometimes I do take the Saddle and it is faster. I don't usually drive to Kona unless I have an appointment, so time matters to me. What I don't like about the Saddle is the fog/clouds getting so thick on the Hilo side. Nothing they do will change that.

If you start in Hilo or Kailua, all three routes take about the same time despite some differences in length. When the Saddle Road realignment is completed, that will change some.

I took the saddle road a couple of months ago. Was doing 75 (didn't even realize it until I looked at my speedometer), and someone was right on my tail!

C.C. to Kona is the fun part!

Another vote here for the Ka'u route.

"Kainaliu Crawl" That's the place where I keep saying "island time" over and over and over.
