Minimum wage and American Samoa
#11
Let's have some late-breaking news about the Californian storms then, they may move here too.
There's a heck of a lot more of them.

What’s wrong with this picture?

I get scratched out for the measly mention of the word Dem’s and Nancy P in the same sentence when her name was part of the topic that we are talking about. Listen to the link and then open up your liberal minds and try and digest the total picture.

Or is that Rob has not liked some of my Toons and has felt it approbate to censer some of my opinions as bipartisan and unexcitable dialogue for this site?

I can see the link between American Soma, the Democrat party, and the future of Hawaii because of this Sham. But by God don’t ever mention or even whisper the words “Dem’s will save us all” for the fear that the wrath of Rob will strike you silent. Geeee.

Tom, That is complete B.S.

I didn't allow gratuitous bashing of Bush and Republicans and I don't allow gratuitous bashing of Democrats on this site. If you want to toss out some raw meat and try to attract a fight you know where that type of activity is welcome. It is not here.

For those of you who are new here Punaweb is for Puna and Hawaiian perspectives not for stupid blue state/red state rants. We are trying to build community here not tear it down.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Thank You Rob!!

I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet
hit the floor each morning, the devil says

"Oh Crap, She's up!"

Maybe some facts are in order to close this topic

The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 has, since inception, contained special provisions for American Samoa, citing its limited economy. American Samoa wages are based on the recommendations of a Special Industry Committee meeting bi-annually. Originally, the Act contained provisions for other territories, provisions which were phased out as those territories developed more diverse economies .

In 2007, the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 was passed, increasing minimum wage in American Samoa by $0.50 per hour in 2007 and another $0.50 per hour each year thereafter until the minimum wage in American Samoa equals that of the fifty states. In response to the minimum wage increase, one of the two major tuna canning plants in American Samoa was shut down in 2009 and 2,041 employees were laid off in the process.

And this .

808, To address your original question. It is certainly having an effect in American Samoa and many residents are out of work now. 60 Minutes did a huge piece on it last Sunday night. From what they said on 60 minutes, most of the exodus is not going to Hawaii, but to LA & Las Vegas, except of course the more athletic types, who are finding the NFL their only way to reach above poverty.

Aloha au i Hawai`i,

Alaska is also becoming a new home for many long time Hawaiians. Jobs are to be found and the pay is very good. Most of the high schools in Anchorage have a 1/2 dozen players that were born and raised in Hawaii.
