PINEAPPLE

Same story. Neither will affect the other by pollination. However, unless you can distinguish the yellow and red plants without fruit, one can take over without you noticing. Heritage red raspberries grow fine for me and spread many feet, but I never found a yellow raspberry that would survive.

Radiopeg, you have red raspberries? A friend of mine would give up her firstborn for a good red raspberry !

Funny as the reds seem so ordinary to me. The yellows produce right into the first frost. My reds and black raspberries don't do as well here in WA. I know they are hosts for some rust or another. I suppose you can't order starts in HI? I am promising not to smuggle in any plant parts. Has anyone ever grown raspberries from seeds? I grew white alpine strawberries from seeds my sister collected. Took over a year until they were transplant size. Not a lot of flavor, kinda custardy.

Can't red raspberries be grown at higher elevations on the island? I could have swore I saw some at the Volcano farmer's market. Probably would need a high row cover for the rain.

Radiopeg - are you still in WA?

Makes sense what allen is saying about the pineapples not crossing because of polination. How could they do that when they are planted from the cutting? Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or experience of their pineapples crossing?

Yes I am, but the mild winter has prevented me from expiring with disappointment over our house not selling. My Realtor said only little rentals to be are being sold. Any place with acreage similar to mine that sold had a manufactured home on it. They were way under the standards of my two story remodeled farm house. I'm waiting. Peggy

I'm putting my place in WA on the market the end of this month. I'm in the same situation as you, 5 acres, 115 year old, somewhat restored farm house... I'm not expecting a huge response, times are tough.

Our place in HPP came with some sort of "local" raspberry that the local kids who helped us do the first stage of yard cleanup pointed out. They are growing in shade but are leggy and have a mild but sweet flavor. Not much in the way of thorns which makes me think it may be endemic or long naturalized, the lack of grazing animals made thorns unneccesary in Hawaii so plants that made it here lost them over time.

The people who built our house planted a lot of interesting fruits so these probably came from them, and 15 years ago that side of the lot wasn't shaded by albezias. The lot was ripped, rocked, and rolled so nothing native was left, they did plant some red and yellow ohias for which I am grateful. Lots of white and yellow pineapples too. They are clearly not crossing.

Sounds great on the raspberries Carol. Do they root and spread easily like most other raspberry varieties? (sorry I know this is a "pineapple" thread topic)

There is a guy at the Hilo Farmer's Market, on Saturdays, who sometimes has red raspberries. It seems rather inconsistent but we've bought them. They were just okay though.
