Local Politics, oh my!

well, the elections are over and it'sa safe to say Hawaii has once again return to it's Democratic roots for the most part.
If it wasn't for the state's love affair with Linda Lingle, she would have fallen too. I was saddened to see Fred Hemmings get re-elected once again too. Even though he was once a surfer I looked up to many years ago. As a human being...he's lacking! Back in the early 70's when I was fresh out of high school I use to see Fred Hemmings cut the hair off of hippies out at Sunset beach. He and his buddies thought that stuff was funny. I have never forgotten see him do it to several people over the years. So it really pains me when I see him get re-elected, and anything good happen his way.
I'm not even gonna go off on Lingle, I'd be here all night writing!

I hope I've been forgiven for some of the things I did in the early 70s. Heck, I need it on a daily basis.

OK, so now the election rah-rah is over, but now is the time we need be vigiliant and perhaps even active.

Most of us are probably pleased with the new 2% fund, but how and who makes sure that it is 2% of the budget and not 2% of a new 102% budget? The amendmment language was not to increase the budget by 2%.

With the rising RE market, we witnessed escalating property values and the increase in property taxes tied to those increases. Now with the market stabilizing, or even falling, will we see a corresponding and appropriate change to property taxes?

With the state enjoying a growing budget surplus, why can't food and medicine be exempted from GET? And for everyone, not some politically motivated "tax credit for the poor" program.

OK, that's my 2 cents for now.

*bump*

Here we go again.

Did anyone catch Larry Geller's blog today.

$100.00 Breakfast's for a Big Island rep. on OAHU?

Any supporters going to be able to fly over there in February?

With the costs of flights it sure is interesting that he would have a fund raiser on that island.... who over on Oahu gets to vote for him?

(And I wonder who paid for this ad in the paper) [Wink]

Abercrombies former aide was sentenced yesterday:

A former aide to Reps. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) was sentenced to six months in prison yesterday after prosecutors petitioned to reduce her penalty in exchange for help with an inquiry into whether lawmakers used congressional staff members and resources to support their political campaigns, according to a source familiar with the case.....

...Abercrombie was traveling yesterday afternoon, but his communications director said he was not aware of any basis for allegations that Abercrombie or other lawmakers had commingled their congressional and campaign functions....

It will be interesting to hear Abercrombies response.
