Mint Plants

Does any one know where I can buy or trade for some mint plants....I hear there are many varieties. I need to make mint tea daily so I need a lot of plants. I hear there is a Chocolate mint plant? That would be great if any one knows where I can get some right away.

I always just buy bundles of a fresh mint I like the flavor of, stick it in a glass of water on the window sill and then plant it after it sets a zillion roots; if you wait too long it slimes. For some reason I have better luck rooting in colored glass instead of clear, but clear works too.

At farmers markets, Natural food stores, Malama Market and KTA sometimes. I look for the really fresh mint bundled with rubber bands. It roots better the fresher it is. Taste or smell it to make sure you like it, my personal preference is peppermint, not spearmint.

I have a chocolate mint, it is a smaller leaf mint with a cookie mint type smell. I first grew this variety in the Chicago area, (along with others) & it does well here, too.

I've seen chocolate mint recently at both Home Depot (Hilo) and Rozett's Nursery in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

I have seen chocolate and also spearmint for sale at the Maku'u farmers market on Sunday. The seller has a booth in the last aisle nearest the highway.

When rooting mint - or anything else - in water, if you use fresh clean water and change it every few days, if won't slime. Also helps if no leaves are submerged.

Just to add that mint grows quite easily from seed so Gardner's Exchange more than likely has some and I believe I saw some at ACE. I'd plant a lemon verbena plant with some peppermint and corn mint and cat mint (catnip) they make pretty garden areas and when they bloom the reseed. Have fun!
