1. Food prices rise over the length of the year, possibly prices double by end of year.
2. Shipping rates rise probably by 20% - 30%
3. Gas prices rise, may go over $5 a gallon locally.
4. Jobs remain scarce.
5. Bank foreclosures start hitting the real estate market and the prices go even lower.
6. Helco remains a publicly traded company.
7. There will be a scarcity of certain items, instead of three choices of things, there will be one or none. More empty shelves in stores.

I predict:
- Food prices will not double
- Gas will not go over $5 locally
- Rice will still cost less than $1 a pound in local stores
- Cable internet will become more widely available in Puna
- Subsistence farming will remain economically unviable in Puna

I predict that PunaWeb will have a number of

"I am holier than thou" posts

until people learn to relax a bit.

Paul,

Could you expand on this point a bit? I'm not disputing the fact that "subsistance farming will remain economically nonviable in Puna", but I'd like to hear your take on it.

Cagary,
This thread is really meant for predictions but quickly then:
In my opinion: food is too cheap, land and e.g. gas too expensive and growing conditions too difficult for subsistence farming on the Big Island. I predict it will remain that way in 2011. You can buy a 20lb bag of rice for $9.99; how can anyone compete with that. I've heard of a number of people who have tried and have had to return to the mainland in the last year. It's only possible, so I gather, if you have another source of income, e.g. retirement or a regular job. I'm sure some people can do it, but they are the exception.
