continental non stop vs hawaiian hnl layover ---- for me its total travel time. Anytime I can get a non stop for the same or less money I'm in.

For me, it's all about those onward connections. Hawaiian requires a change of airline, not just a change of planes, to get beyond any of the western cities they serve on the mainland. At LAX, that usually involves a change of terminals in addition to the change of airlines. If one is going beyond Vegas, Hawaiian is of little use.

I can, however, see how a west coast based visitor to the Big Island would like those extra hours of daylight on their first day in the Islands.

ITO-LAX is more expensive than KOA-LAX on United/Continental?

We had to travel to the dc area this weekend for a funeral. Booking the day before we traveled, we got round trip hilo to washington dulles tickets for $711 plus taxes. We've taken the fkight three times so far and have found coach to be full, but first class to be 50% filled with frequent fkyer upgrades

In early June there was no entertainment. However, I had lots of family and friends visit since then and they said they had movies etc. on the back of the seats. Every flight was full.

In CA now (Bay Area). Saved $350 by flying Alaska direct out of Kona instead of Continental direct out of Hilo. I'm not naive about fares, and neither are most people that can look up fares on the internet. I'm surprised there were even 30 people on the flight. I can drive 4 hours total and spend $30 on gas to save $350.
I hope it continues though, but I'd never fly it at current prices. I don't think I'd ever pay over $550 currently to fly from the Big Island to the Bay Area.

We booked on the United website, and we had no entertainment on our ITO-LAX flight.

I went a few weeks ago - one way had entertainment, return had none. So just depends on what equipment they're using that day.
