Breaking down HECO

As the state shifts its focus to renewable energy, a new bill seeks to restructure the utility and make room for competition

State lawmakers have introduced a host of bills in the new legislative session aimed at keeping pace with Hawaii's rapidly evolving energy sector, including one proposal that would force Hawaiian Electric Co. out of the power generation business and have it focus strictly on delivering electricity to customers.

The bill restructuring HECO (HB 2400) also calls for the utility to set a single electricity rate across the three counties it serves, and prioritizes geothermal as the state's preferred alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels.

FYI: Bills being heard tomorrow in an effort to change geothermal development process, and work towards less dependency on oil. The effort to utilize state lands may assist in the effort to lower rates, which today, are the highest in the nation. (*See Star Advertiser front page article)

Here is the announcement for the hearing of HB2689/2690/2691:

PLEASE provide testimony (you can do it online at link provided) in support of these bills by 9:00am tomorrow. The ulitmate goal (for us) is for Puna to reap more benefits (in addition to the royalties paid in order to do business in our state) as the host district for existing geothermal development, and dealing with the monopoly HECO maintains.

Other bills will be forthcoming that will assist in that effort: HB 2039 & SB 2001. A total of eleven (11) bills will be coming forth this session and thank you for the opportunity to share the information.

Time for change, Puna deserves SO much more. Just my opinion. Mahalo again.
