No-Cash System alive on the Big Island
#1
This is from an article in the Big Island Weekly:

If you visit the farmers market any Wednesday, you’ll find Jason Riessland and Clark Robinson holding fort at the “Front Yard Food” table laden with vegetable starts, herb plants, fresh produce and other garden items. They proudly announce on their sign that “U.S. dollars are not accepted.” Instead, all the items are free, and they accept donations of produce, compost, or even some seeds – whatever folks might have that day.

Similar no-cash systems are taking off in cities across the country and are called time banks. “Time banking is a pattern of reciprocal service exchange that uses units of time as currency. It is an example of an alternative monetary system.”

A brand new 'time bank' is about to start up in Puna. Join Sean and Mary Jennings at the Nanawale Community Center on February 11 for an introductory potluck from noon until 2 p.m. It will include orientation and music. Contact the Jennings at 982-8925 or e-mail them at swjennings@gmail.com.
