Every time I head into lower Puna lately I try to do that before 3pm on weekdays. Other wise the one road heading south can become a "parking lot". Lower Puna would be my last choice for a daily commute to Hilo but Pahoa is handy for most things groceries and hardware (except at higher prices).
The extra $300 per month insurance would prompt me to build a shack on a cheap piece of land and let Pele have it in that case
