You know if you are still not sure what it is. Maybe it is a mosquito, try getting some bats in the area, or grow some onion or garlic for mosquito control.

Have you figured out what was biting you yet? Did you even try to put up any fly traps?

If they were mosquitoes, what measures are you going to take for mosquito control? Is there any standing water in the area?

Haven't heard from you in awhile. Have you figured out what was biting you? I hope it wasn't a bee or mosquito.

That sounds like stinging nettle all the way. The biggest clues are the welt and the horridly long itching time. I guess some people's reactions are different, but I get hit by those things all the time working in our yard. No pain, just a slight, almost unnoticeable burning for a few minutes, then the itching sets in. And it's INTENSE. And it lasts for more than a week. I get welts with little blisters where the needles hit. I friggen HATE those things... I'd take double the coquis if we could be rid of those baddies... Learn what the moths look like, murder them, and be careful with your yard trimmings/walking barefoot/weeding without gloves. Good luck!

After talking to Cass, the entomologist at the Dept of Ag in Hilo, I accept that the bites I've blamed on everything else are little fire ants. My house is upper HPP & he said HPP is inundated. They are in my house, so am setting baits. 2 weeks ago, after I set an insecticide bomb, a pile of dead fire ants came out of an electrical receptacle in the living room. I originally thought it was termite frass, but took the bodies to the Dept of Ag & they id'd under a microscope. They are very knowledgeable & have lots of information. I highly recommend it.

From the http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/ip-lfa.pdf publication:
"Products such as Siege® Pro and Amdro® Pro (both hydramethylnon), Extinguish® Plus (hydramethylnon and methoprene), and Esteem® Ant Bait (pyriproxyfen) have been successfully used to control LFA infestations." |
