Harry Kim Running for Mayor
#11
Kapohocat:
The pain is a bit much.
But I think I understand.
All of us Hawaii and elsewhere are in for a hell of a time.
Thanks, you remember and understand.
Keiko may have made a real difference I think.

Keiko Bonk for mayor???....puleeze, gimme a break!
Keiko was elected to the County Council twice and actually served as the County Council Chair for her second term. She made her boyfriend her executive assistant and they got caught in the same kinds of corrupt politics as she accused Yamashiro and others of. Nothing like giving the Greens and women a bad name! Check out what she actually accomplished in two terms on the council; nothing I can think of!
The real leader in Keiko's family was her father, UHH Archaeology Professor William J. Bonk, who died in December 2008.
But for you Keiko fans, she has filed to run as a Green Party candidate for the State House seat long occupied by the man who has run the Legislature for years, Speaker of the House Calvin Say. She will do us all a major favor if she is able to unseat him, something the House organizers have been unable to do.
She reportedly decided to not run against Malama Solomon and Lorraine Inouye for the North Hawaii Senate seat...smart move. Maybe she'll knock Say off his perch. If so, I hope she learned from her troubles on the Hawaii County Council!

Thanks for the reminder of the thing with Michael Christopher Frankie.... but it hardly stacked up as a comparable to Yamashiro on a corruption scale. Was there something else I am unaware of or forgot that was a scandal? The thing about hiring her boyfriend was Michael was a very bright guy and the bench in Puna in those days wasn't too deep.

The Hilo gang was desperate to keep Keiko out of the mayor's office and all they could really throw at her was her relationship with Michael and that didn't stick too hard.... so Harry Kim came forward to rescue the island from a progressive woman mayor. A Punatic.

At least that's how I recall it. Just a point of view.

My take was as a member of the press working in Hilo, not as a Punatic! I was so pissed that she got in the same sort of little turf kine battles that Emily did with the county workers. And he showed up for work more than she did! She accomplished nothing!!! Like I said, her father was the true leader in that family.
You all have no clue how the council treated women back in those days. They were so disrespectful and horrible to Merle Lai and to Helene when she was still on the council. And then for Keiko to turn around when she actually was able to form a majority and play the old female games just proved she was no better than the good ole boys. Sorry but that's how I saw it from inside the newsroom where people spoke freely about what was going on. I didn't cover the County Council, that wasn't my beat. But I heard the scuttlebutt and, as a working woman, observed how she played her hand.

Thanks Frankie, your opinion and POV is always appreciated. Keiko (and we all) were younger then too.

Frankie, whatever your opinion, I want to say thank you (sincerely!) because I do appreciate your very informed opinions.

Good thing we have people like you who keep their spoon in the pot to keep us thinking.

There are 7 candidates running for this position. What do we know about the other 4? One of the biggest problems with the voting constituents is that people vote based on name recognition; thus, money wins and plenty of room for corruption.
