The population statistics for Hawaii have come out and the population grew 14,000 in one year, mostly foreigners. But there were more people from here moving to the mainland. This decrease is probably due to people needing to go to the mainland to find a job. A lot of people get worked up about the keiki and schools and too much growth, but the reality is if an area doesn't have a solid core economy, those factors become irrelevant. Hawaii's core economies are tourism and federal funding. This isn't enough to stimulate growth enough to where the kids born and educated here are able to stay here. And underlying that is the cost of living, and underlying that is the cost of energy.

The irony in all this is that fixing the "problems" would create plenty jobs, if only County/State, HELCO, and "big local landowners" could cooperate.

Asia would be my guess - the Russians moving to Spain with the purchase of a 200k$ house. Spain offers a residents visa. Costa Del Sol for 200 grand with a visa tossed in..... pretty stiff competition - grin

The more informative parts are the graphs, particularly GDP (gross domestic product). While most states are recovering, a small handful are floundering in negative GDP, essentially still in recession. Hawaii still has negative GDP, meaning the economy is still shrinking.
