Question about tuition
#1
Hello,

Does anyone know what it takes to "prove" that you live here in order to get in state tuition?

We've been living here full time since May, and my daughter wants to take a college class this summer.

When we looked into it for our daughter a few years ago things like registering to vote, a local bank account, vehicle registration, where the student graduated from, and employment history and state income tax documentation are all used to decide on the student's status. If your daughter was over 18 when you moved here she cannot piggyback on your residency but must have established her own. If she is currently enrolled in, or graduated from, a Hawaii high school it is much easier. The rules for county community colleges are sometimes different than for state universities but I don't know about here.

Carol, she moved here the same time as us (she was 15) she is now 16 and enrolled at Keaau High School. She wants to take a college course this summer but I'm not ready to for up over $800 for a summer semester of out of state tuition.

I guess we need to call and find out for sure.

thanks obie for the link!

12 months prior residency to the beginning of the 1st class - proof can be provided by parent if underage... if student has taken 6+ credit hours (pretty sure it is college credits...but you should make sure of this...) during the 12 month residency, then that time is not counted towards residency requirements.

The 2013 Summer info will be linked through this site, when it comes out (most of the info is still 2012 right now)

Also check to see if this counts for the Running Start program, esp. since there may be scholarships available (high school councillor may have more info on that):

Dayna,
Many of the HS students at our school have taken classes through Running start, but we have had kids who were charged out of state tuition because they had moved here as seniors and hadn't been here long enough to be considered in state.

Have you tried the WUE program? I believe Alaska and Hawaii both share this program.

UH Hilo does participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (Tuition is 150% of instate tuition), but this is good only if the student wants to maintain their home residency, not if they are wanting to change residency. (also good to know, some states & some universities offer WUE with many restrictions, inc. the programs they admit.... so if looking at WUE, make sure that the university offers the programs within the WUE - UH-Hilo is one of the most generous in acceptance of WUE) Link:

Carey, yes you are right.
I wasn't thinking clearly when I posted.. I've known many Alaskan students that took advantage of this program.
By the time Dayna's daughter ready for full time classes she'll already be a resident.

Yeah this year is her sophmore/junior year. If she takes one class this summer she can graduate a year early from Keaau High. Her home residency is now Hawaii so we'll just have to wait that year. She'll either be taking an English or History class at either the community college or UH Hilo.
