I know Jamie and Noi very well. They have several properties on the east side of the Big Island. The one in HPP is lovely. They also have rentals on Reed's Island and in Kapoho. Good suggestion.

We stayed at the Pakalana Inn in Hilo a few months ago on Punahoa Street near the Farmers' Market. There are only a few rooms, two of which can be joined for a group.
There is a small restaurant on the first floor for breakfast and lunch, much of Hilo is within walking distance, and the rooms were clean and attractive. It's also pet-friendly, which probably isn't a consideration for your visitors but something to keep in mind for those of us who like to travel with our dogs. The owner offers a Kamaaina rate, too.
No A/C, which was fine with us, and you get some traffic noise and coquis, again fine with us but mainland visitors might not be comfortable with the sounds. I slept like a baby.

We've stayed at the Kona Comfort house several times. If you aren't averse to staying on that side of the island, you might enjoy this place. It's a huge house that's been converted into units. Upstairs, which is by far the nicest part of the house, has a living room, dining room, two baths, 3 bedrooms and a kitchen, plus a fenced-in yard. If you don't need all 3 bedrooms, you can just rent the upstairs as a 1-bedroom (the other 2 bedrooms and 1 bath are on the other side of the house and are either locked or rented, your preference). Downstairs, there are two units - a studio and a 1-bedroom flat, each with a private bathroom. Plenty of room and dog-friendly, except in the studio. The house is in a nice, quiet neighborhood.
