This is kind of big for our little village, though it hasn't got much press. The girls beat Kau for third place in division two, which gets them to the state post-season on Oahu next week.
I probably wouldn't know except my daughter is on the team (one of two HAAS kids on the Pahoa team). The games can be incredibly exciting. The last time Pahoa girls volleyball went to state was in 1997 when the current coach, Eden Scanlan, was on the team.
There was a big article in last weeks paper:

Anyway, the final fundraising push is on as the trip to Oahu will cost thousands. Get a car wash at New Hope Church this Saturday and support the local team.

Great to see little Pahoa come together ( Haas & Pahoa ), Shows how much stronger they can be united. State opportunities are not only a lot of fun for the Kieki, They are also very educational. There independence and personalities really seem to blossom during these off island trips. Hopefully chaperoned properly. This is good stuff, thank you.

It'll be some short-lived unity as HAAS prepares to field their own team come next season.

I coached the VB team at Parker back in the 90's and Pahoa and Hilo were always the toughest teams to play!
Good luck girls!
And can they use miles or just cash?

Kapohocat, I sent you the coach's contact info privately. Thanks for the idea of miles!
2liveque, not so sure on being short-lived, in a general sense. Pahoa and HAAS had a combined track team during the same period, some of whom are going to state as well.
I am in conversation with a Pahoa student who is trying, unsuccessfully, to get a soccer team going at Pahoa. HAAS has soccer teams starting practice recently. The "policy" is that charter schools can join the regular school's sports team if the charter school has no such team. Here we have a case where the charter school has a team the regular school doesn't. It will be interesting to see if the "policy" will include the flexibility to go the other way around.
gypsy69, they are a great bunch of girls and the coaches are no nonsense and all about safety as chaperones.
dfryman, the girls are as revved as can be. Fundraising as well as practice. They will have a booth at the Kalapana market tonight, and added another car wash Saturday at KTA. They will have a fundraising presence at the Pahoa haunted house and the likely the HAAS Spooktacular as well.
Cheers,
Kirt

Ha! They made the news last night.
Lost their first game, so they're in the consolation bracket now with one win.
