Here's some footage of what the storm was like at Punalu'u beach. It's a promo for Ka'u Preservation, but you can see that the waves were getting up higher on the beach than normal. Nice to see that it seemed like just another day hauled out at the beach for the turtles.

The unscientific version of why the Big Island was spared from the hurricane is very simple: Madame Pele saw it coming, she put her foot down which caused the island to shake... and the energy that was releasd from the shake she took with deep breath and exhaled which created a wind shear that cut the Hurricane to pieces.
