The press, appealing to the masses, uses "magnitude" even though "intensity" is the more important aspect. An 8.0 in Hawaii is not nearly the effect an 8.0 has in New Madrid, Missouri, where the water table rises and liquifies the ground. When the New Madrid earthquakes occurred, gas lights in Chicago were damaged and the earthquakes were felt in Boston.
