Tex's plate lunches & malasadas are the best. Loved going there when I was young and going to Kona on the weekends.

Cafe Il Mondo.
Healthy, Delicious. "Slow"-food. Here's the menu:

The two places I have heard good things about, both newer, are Grandma's Kitchen for breakfast and lunch

and Green Market and Cafe.

Grandma's is American style with emphasis on Portuguese homestyle comfort food, and offers Portuguese Bean Soup, and I heard someone rave about the burgers.

GM&C is attached to the new natural foods store and you can see examples of the dishes if you check the Yelp link above.

Those I know who live there seem to think Il Mondo is solidly third behind these two newcomers. (But good Italian food always makes me happy.)

Tex's went downhill once the tour buses all began stopping there and unloading a bus full of people at a time. I used to go there quite often, but I don't stop there any more.

People say there are better malasadas in Pahala and from Baker Tom at Uncle Billy's. I don't really eat malasadas, so just going on what I hear from those who pursue them.

Tex's may still be worth checking out, but I think that the old Tex's that earned the nostalgia is a thing of the past.

Gramma's is run by Chris and Kendra who used to run the Fifties in Laupahoehoe.
