anyone tried growing Feijoa sellowiana fruit?

It is a warm-temperate to subtropical plant that also will grow in the tropics, but requires at least 50 hours of winter chilling to fruit

The fruit, maturing in autumn, is green, ellipsoid, and about the size of a chicken egg. It has a sweet, aromatic flavor which tastes like pineapple, apple and mint. The flesh is juicy and is divided into a clear gelatinous seed pulp and a firmer, slightly granular, opaque flesh nearer the skin. The fruit falls to the ground when ripe and at its fullest flavor, but it may be picked from the tree prior to falling to prevent bruising.

The fruit pulp resembles the closely related guava, having a gritty texture. The feijoa pulp is used in some natural cosmetic products as an exfoliant. Feijoa fruit has a distinctive, potent smell that resembles that of a fine perfume. The aroma is due to the ester methyl benzoate and related compounds that exist in the fruit.

I don't think anyone is really going to fall in love with this fruit. The taste is just not that great, especially considering the number of spectacular tasting fruit available on the Big Island. I can think of at least 10 fruits that are much better to eat.

Go ahead and try some, but I wouldn't suggest going so far as buying a tree and putting the effort into getting fruit from it.

We had these in our garden when I was a kid in S. California. They are a beautiful silvery small tree or shrub. The fruit is a required tastes, kinda strong and the outside is a bit grainy for my taste, the middle is very soft and good. They did make great jam and chutney. The flowers are edible and beautiful. I would put them in a salad which would be a great conversation piece for a potluck. [Smile]

I have one in my garden. FWIW, the name name Feijoa is no longer valid and is now known as Acca. I like the flavor of the fruit. The flowers are delicious.

I grew it in Southern California. It is a pretty plant. We used it to perfume the house. We'd take the fruit off the tree and put it in the kitchen. It was freakishly fragrant. I seldom ate the fruit but my ex, who was hispanic, loved them. He ate everything.
