Pele ceremonies
#1
when insomnia invades my bed, i tend to read. the pw post to the link of visuals from of the Pu‘u ‘O‘o–Kupaianaha Eruption, 1983–1997:

jarred vague memories of reading about pele ceremonies that successfully stopped the lava, i googled kalapana ceremonies and pele ceremonies.

a ceremony was held in kalapana on friday june 27th according to the below link. This was followed by a sustainability weekend workshop. we are so fortunate to have uncle robert here in puna.

the best site i found on pele ceremonies contains a 47 page research paper with much of the data collected and translated by mary kawena pukui. if you are inclined, it is an incredible and insightful body of work. here is the link:

http://hbs.bishopmuseum.org/pubs-online/pdf/op30p41.pdf

the specifics to pele ceremonies begin on page 26. would a haoli like me, reciting these prayers have any effect? would it be another insult to pele?
i viewed harry kim's beautiful talk after the hurricane and my takeaway has been to reflect on how truly disconnected i am from the pre missionaries religious component of hawaiian culture with my little off grid upcycled organic scene in lower puna. i pray for forgiveness.

Aloha e Shay,

I think the author of the article is actually H. Arlo Nimmo and not Tutu Pukui.
Besides that, I don't think haole like yourself would offend Pele at all if you were to go and speak with her. As long it comes from your na'au (gut/heart) she will hear what you have to say.

me ke aloha,
