The Pahoa Post Office told a Beach Lots resident yesterday that once the flow goes over 130, the residents of Lower Puna will have to go to Hilo P.O. to get their mail. This is completely unacceptable. I think we need to organize a protest to put pressure on them to handle the situation the way UPS, FEDEX and all of us will, which is to use Government Road.

Thank you for posting this, I will check with the post office directly to get the scoop.
If you believe the flow-path prognosticators, the post office could take a direct hit. Hopefully they won't leave our mail in there because that stuff is flammable!
I completely understand why they would need to shut it down, at least temporarily. But now I'm interested in hearing their plans.

I agree - when I asked my postman about it, he gave me a card that says "We want to know if we met your needs today?

I called the number and it was very difficult to find an option that would let me connect to a person. I finally got through to "Joe" who gave me two suggestions: The first was to contact my Congressional reps and present our difficulties and ask for help. The second was to call the District Office for our 967 region which is 808 423 3471 and ask for the District Manager.
Both good ideas I think. Let's start calling and do our best to forestall this looming 'disaster'

From another PW thread:
From Ruderman's Office:
At present, the plan is to close the Pahoa PO if evacuation orders are made. Mail will be made available in Hilo. The Kea'au PO is not a viable option for general delivery due to its size.
We are in contact with the USPS both here in Hawaii and the Mainland, as well as Senator Schatz's office, to explore all options for mail service to the Puna District. All parties are working on a solution that will best serve the needs of the public as well as the logistical realities that may come.
Our office will be releasing more information as soon as we receive it.

May be a business opportunity for someone/some group. Food for thought. I'd love to see the old style post office again; like Ninole or Hana, etc. Horse and buggy delivery would be awesome! [
]Combine it with milk and poi delivery, along with FedEx packages. The USPS will not be allowed to abandon good tax paying citizens. Give us the approval to do it ourselves. Can.
