Police not using his siren/or light hits 4 Runner
#1
Be careful on the roads. Officer runs red light going 60mph then hits the 4Runner

That officer needs some time off and be held accountable for his lack of judgement.[V]

Witnesses say an officer did not have his lights or sirens on when he sped through a red light and smashed into the driver's side of a Toyota 4Runner at the intersection of Makaala Street and Kanoelehua Avenue in Hilo.

We were just behind this accident going into town last night... gotta saw, was not surprised to see that Camero in a wreck!

I have seen this police black Camero around town many times (unless this is a popular Hilo choice...most the Puna police vehicles are not Cameros...), the Camero often turns on lights & siren right at the intersection if the light is red, blasts through the intersection, then turns them off when cleared of the intersection.

Have often been been behind the Camero, with nothing "emergency" seeming to happen after the intersection... but of course, I do not have any more to go on than what is seen... so maybe there is a reason for this frequent behavior.

GM vehicles have had event data recorders for years. I would assume that either the police or the local GM dealers have a reader. These "black boxes" record a number of data points:

Pre 2006:
Vehicle speed (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Engine speed (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Brake status (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Throttle position (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Driver's seat belt state (On/Off)
Passenger's airbag enabled or disabled state (On/Off)
Airbag Warning Lamp status (On/Off)
Time from vehicle impact to airbag deployment
Maximum Delta-V ( DV ) for near-deployment event
Delta-V ( DV ) vs. time for frontal airbag deployment event
Time from vehicle impact to time of maximum Delta-V ( DV )
Time between near-deploy and deploy event (if within 5 seconds)

Also included, 2006 on:
Low tire pressure warning system status
Traction control status
Anti lock brake status
Transmission range
Service engine lamp status
Vehicle door 2/4 status open/closed
Outside air temperature in degrees F
Passenger seat belt switch
Yaw rate
Lateral acceleration
Steering wheel angle
PDOF / Principal direction of force degrees
And more...

I would hope that the police take a pro-active stance on this accident (as well as all accidents involving police vehicles). I wonder if they grabbed the event data recorder for the police vehicle that hit/killed the cyclist last month?

I wouldn't count on any of the above.

Well, of course not. The bicyclists can hear you coming if you turn your siren on.
