Statewide statistics are misleading, especially in this case.

Would you care to back up that assertion with some facts? How and why are those stats "misleading, especially in this case."

This discussion can very easily be settled using the tried and true method of "day quantum level."
Like the blood quantum determination, it will settle all disputes about who is what.

1st: How many days was a resident physically residing in Hawaii?
2nd: Set a level of 100%, 50%, or even 25% of days spent in Hawaii as defining a legal resident.

See how easy that was?
Now, start counting...

"Hawaii is growing faster than the rest of the nation as a whole."

Or, as the article puts it more precisely, "... since 2010, the population has grown by at least 1% each year -- that's higher than the national average of 0.8%."

At least 0.2% higher than the national average.

How and why are those stats "misleading"

Hawaii is discontiguous; of the "1.4M residents", 80% are on Oahu, and have all the lifestyle options implied by that population.

I suggest that per-island totals better reflect the reality of the different Hawaii, especially since us "country" folks can't drive to the "city" (for whatever reason).
