mold/mildew ONLY on Bamboo furniture.......HELP!
#1
Hey Punatics!

Though I live in Hamakua, I think you moisture rich folks can help me. I have unique furniture in my home. Most of it is reclaimed teak, and never molds. However I have some elephant bamboo furniture. It lived outside in Kona before I bought it and much of the shellac "burned" off in the Kona sun.

If you think you have mildew probs in Puna, let me tell you...........you ain't got nothin' on Hamakua Mauka! I live at 2200. There is a large temp swing everyday between night and day. Thus everything gets covered with "dew" every morning. This leads to wicked mold/mildew. Things I didn't even KNOW could mildew, do so here. (My one complaint about Hamakua Mauka.)

My question isn't regarding that. I know airflow is my friend and have learned my lesson. However, I have question regarding the furniture. My reclaimed teak NEVER molds. My cedar walls and almost everything wooden in the house never molds. The Elephant bamboo molds if you look at it the wrong way. I am wondering if I can treat it with something, then coat it with a sealant of some kind? Is it screwed once mildew/mold gets its roots into it? Is bamboo just more prone to mildew mold? Has anyone had this problem before? I have no idea.

It's JUST the Elephant bamboo that molds furniture wise; you fellow precip pestered Puna People have any recommendations???!!!!

Looking at a gallon of Behr, homedepot of course, All-in-one wood cleaner "Cleans, brighten and removes mold & mildew stains." While you are there pick up a few cans of Minwax polyurethane spray, matte or satin unless you prefer more gloss. Easy. After a month or two coat it with the orange scented furniture wax, I get mine at Ace. Don't forget to reupholster the cushions, lol.

Try Jomax, you can get it at Home Depot. I use it on fiberglass, painted and unpainted wood and even my bbq grill cover.

Get a cushion for outside furniture. They will still mold but it blasts right off with a pressure washer.

I would recommend a closed cell foam. It is commonly used as the cushion in boat seats. It is non-porous and impermeable, and as such will not hold moisture.

Ive used Oxalic acid on boats to remove stains prior to refinishing the brightwork

Also does wonders on rust stains

The commercial wood cleaners bought in hardware stores have Oxalic as their active ingredient

Its a fierce oxidizer - so shipping by air is hard if you are buying ebay etc ...ace sells small quantities but pricey (10 - 15 for 8 ounces if I remember right)

We buy it in bulk for the boats from an old school supplier on the mainland - about 5 dollars a pound

West Marine sells it in small quantities as well
