Looking for Wauke
#1
I'm in search of Wauke / Paper Mulberry that is free of LFA and not from an area with Ohi'a wilt. I'm doing research for hula classes & would like to plant Wauke in my garden, maybe try making kapa when the wauke permits. Any leads are most appreciated[Smile] Mahalo!

why worry about Ohia wilt?...
Broussonetia papyrifera is in a completely different family of plants...
there are 2 types of Wauke, round wimpy leaf type, and leaves with fig-like lobes and more rough textured and better kine.... both of these are in same family with Banyan, Ficus, Black Mulberry, Fig, A'ia'i, etc. the Fig Family, Moraceae

Ohia is in family with Guava, Mt Apple, Rose Apple, Eucalyptus, Kolea, etc. the Myrtle Family, Myrtaceae

ps Im sure many here reading this have Wauke and dont have an Electric Ant prob, but are in the 'Ohia wilt area' yet dont have any dead Ohia trees, ie Me
thus, you may not get too many responses....
good luck, aloha

Mahalo BH,

I haven't educated myself about how Ohi'a wilt is spread (yet), so I err on the side of caution. I do know that some viruses, bacteria, spores, etc can be spread 'off host' so I am super paranoid about moving plant material from infected areas. I'd hate myself for a long, long time if I started the wilt in my area. Thanks for the heads up that i'm hobbling my odds of success - makes it less mysterious if I come up empty handed Smile

Aloha Erin,
How is life treating you?
According to the article in today's Trib, you are wise to be cautious. Merrie Monarch is asking people not to use ohia in their hula this year. The wilt can be spread 'off host' on pruners, shoes, etc., as well as on infected ohia.
