Another Merrie Monarch has concluded. What a fantastic display of hula, both ancient and modern. The new judges (not "new" in our culture, very seasoned choices this year) had such a tough assignment in choosing "the winners".
All the halau were winners, (again) as the progressive choices made we stunning. The meaning of each
mele (song/chant) was conveyed by these
keiki o ka aina flawlessly. From the
mele chosen, to the expressions of that
mele, to the attire, it was one of the best competitions I've seen in over the 50+ years.
Johnny Lum Ho finally has been acknowledged for his genius. The "Honu Kea" his wahine danced for the
kahiko, defied superlatives.
Here is the video:

He writes and composes all of his entries over the years, which adds to the challenge his dancers face in interpretation. First place! No longer is "tradition" (no offense meant) the only standard. Eo!
As our guests and
ohana (both extended and close) leave us, many have asked to please express a fond
"a hui hou", and mahalo to our residents for our kindness and aloha.
Leaving you with this
mele which was the last song one of the judges sang to us in the wee hours. So appropriate...By our own, Dennis Pavao, "All Hawaii Stand Together":

Then, they sang this song, by Myra K. English: (circa 1968)

A hui hou to all of our ohana and guests, and again, many expressions of "mahalo" to all of you. Until next year, reflection and
nahenahe music, must maintain those of us who cherish these moments until we meet again.

ETA: Had to add the tribute to Uncle George Naope, creator of the "Merrie Monarch"...My Tutu adored him as her student. One in a million, indeed...Mahalo, Uncle.
