Aloha ahiahi, pog (just got my heart back in my chest after the 4.4 shaker! Guess Tutu Pele enjoyed the chants and mele dedicated to her this evening...[Smile])

As to your question, kala mai, no more answer...I will say those would be "good kine tears", not "sorrowful tears". Mahalo for understanding the depth of hula, and the meaning. Chicken skin a few times tonight...The winner was stunning!

Tomorrow is kahiko, and should be exceptional. Powerful indeed! A hui hou, rest well.

Another Merrie Monarch has concluded. What a fantastic display of hula, both ancient and modern. The new judges (not "new" in our culture, very seasoned choices this year) had such a tough assignment in choosing "the winners".

All the halau were winners, (again) as the progressive choices made we stunning. The meaning of each mele (song/chant) was conveyed by these keiki o ka aina flawlessly. From the mele chosen, to the expressions of that mele, to the attire, it was one of the best competitions I've seen in over the 50+ years.

Johnny Lum Ho finally has been acknowledged for his genius. The "Honu Kea" his wahine danced for the kahiko, defied superlatives.

Here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Thzoe8Yhx4&feature=youtu.be

He writes and composes all of his entries over the years, which adds to the challenge his dancers face in interpretation. First place! No longer is "tradition" (no offense meant) the only standard. Eo!

As our guests and ohana (both extended and close) leave us, many have asked to please express a fond "a hui hou", and mahalo to our residents for our kindness and aloha.

Leaving you with this mele which was the last song one of the judges sang to us in the wee hours. So appropriate...By our own, Dennis Pavao, "All Hawaii Stand Together":

Then, they sang this song, by Myra K. English: (circa 1968)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeUNWzpedg0

A hui hou to all of our ohana and guests, and again, many expressions of "mahalo" to all of you. Until next year, reflection and nahenahe music, must maintain those of us who cherish these moments until we meet again.

E Hawai'i E Ku'u Home...Hawai'i Aloha

ETA: Had to add the tribute to Uncle George Naope, creator of the "Merrie Monarch"...My Tutu adored him as her student. One in a million, indeed...Mahalo, Uncle.

ETA: Adding the video above of the "Honukea"(white turtle) kahiko (Johnny Lum Ho's winners for wahine kahiko)

Kiana, Sorry, I just saw this (I will definitely use the "It was Merrie Monarch week" excuse for not replying, though I missed it completely!
I used to get to the stadium before 11am & would be somewhere before the lei stands..
This year, It was looking to be sunny & warm & I was coveting a spot on the shadier from of the stadium (and had a friend in a wheel chair that need one of the very, very few wheelchair slots), so I got my FA out to the stadium just before 9am, and got my usual spot near the lei stand (and 4 of the people who usually arrive about the same time I do, ALSO arrived around 9am this year...so though I was a couple of hours earlier, everything was same-same)
Made & gave away a few dozen ti leis, kept cool with the frozen leaves & had a blast & got one of the last wheelchair slots...so all good
For those who would like a little taste (Warning & sorry for those that have slow connections, these files may be more than a little huge)
