Pog, I lived in South Jersey. I never experienced Somerville circle.
After getting your driving license, navigating through a circle was a right of passage to prove you knew how to drive. If I remember right the "Airport Circle" near Camden was multi lane. That was a little scary at 17 years old with less than a couple of hundred miles logged.
I have noticed that all the circles I knew have been reconfigured and replaced with traffic lights. I think it's because of the HUGE increase in traffic from back when I was a teenager. I doubt Puna's traffic could ever approach New Jersey's, even if every empty lot was occupied. So I do think a circle (or "roundabout" as some like to call it) would work. Again, that's only if....[]
