How does one find out about rentals here?

Ginoza are a good landlord, but Hilo only, Day Lum seems to use the "application fee" as a source of revenue, using "too good to be true" rental ads to generate applications, then tell you it is gone once you've paid, but the ad keeps running every weekend. Some of the smaller real estate companies also have rentals too.

Some people stay in vacation rentals on a longer term basis at first, 3-6 months, fully furnished and no additional utility bills while getting oriented. A lot of people who had fantasies of being VRBO mavens in East Hawaii would be happy to have a 3-6 month tenant, and will discount the rent. My brother in law is paying less than market rate for a fully furnished VRBO he found through AirBNB, all utilities and a once a week cleaner included. It gives him a hassle free place to live while clearing his lot and building in HSRE.

A short term lease is especially helpful if jobs are still up in the air. I got stuck with a 12 month lease on the wrong side of the island when I first moved here over 20 years ago, my landlord was a stand up guy about it, but I could have been really screwed, or been driving to Kona every day to swing a hammer in the hot sun and then drive home in the dark, this was before Saddle road was an easy drive.

There are way more vacation rentals than customers. Contact the owner - by phone - and be mindful of the time zone difference.
