Most guys are using D9s to rip rock. Getting the things moved around costs a lot so look around the neighborhood to see if any are working close by and then ask who there working for if their ok. Sounds unscientific but it's work for me a couple times in hpp

I don't know what equipment Nick Moore has, but if he's got the equipment you need, he's based in Volcano and does great work at a good price.

We used Nick Moore and were very happy. I think he has a D6, but we used the excavator.

Hopefully you've found someone, but if I can offer a bit of advice - plan further in advance. There may be some guys that can show up within a few days but many book far in advance. If you are new to Hawaii you will soon discover that it can take a few weeks just to get a call back, ha! Hope it works out well. Smile

Hey JJonHawaii, Did you find someone good to work with for your Fern Forest lot? I have one of the 3 acre square lots in Fern Forest and I'm looking for the same thing. I just talked to someone advertising land clearing on Craigslist and he highly recommended I bring in a D9 and rip at least an 80'X80' house pad and driveway so that the rock ripped up can be used to level everything. He said it would end up costing a lot more to bring in an excavator because you will have to fill all the depression areas with "imported" rock and it won't drain right. He said a 300' driveway would cost $,4500 to $5,000 and another $3,000 for the house pad. I was hoping to do it cheaper because I just want a small driveway and small area cleared for a tiny house (20' X 20' house).

Sounds a bit high, but maybe prices have been going up...

I would try to get everything done in one shot one price... I'd say for a driveway, housepad 100x100, tree/fence line holes, power, and sewer / water lines lines, level catchment tank pad done... even a permanent power pole hole if going with grid. Everything for 12-15K ... maybe even negotiate in 5-10 loads of cinder to be spread out as well or rock depending on price.
