I just yesterday wrote an email to Bay Clinic's new CEO pstrauss@bayclinic.org about the quality of care. As I understand he wants to know what is wrong.

The hospital in Ka'u has been there for many decades (just look at it and you can tell). It was built back in the cane days and was inherited by the HHSC system. Its continuation is sustained by the fact that the relative difference in distance (and time) from it to either Hilo or Kona is about 90 minutes. It does offer limited emergency services and can, at least, stabilize a patient long enough to get them to Hilo or Kona (usually Hilo). It also has a Heli-Pad for Med-Evac, etc. By both the state and the feds, its designated as a "Critical Access Hospital" because of its remoteness and the lack of alternatives in the area.

Believe me, the Kau Hospital is a life-saver but not exactly a model to base healthcare in Puna around. Its severely antiquated, despite the best efforts of some very dedicated staff and a community that does rally around them to the best of its ability.
